Jarrett's career started in 1984 when he only drove in 3 events.
By 1987 he became a full-time driver, and he bounced from team to team throughout the 1988 season. In 1989 Dale raced the entire season for Cale Yarborough.
After spending 2 seasons and earning his first career victory (in 1991) in the #21 Citgo Ford for the Wood Brothers in 1990 & 1991, he would take over the #18 Interstate Batteries Chevrolet for Joe Gibbs in 1992.
After stepping down from this ride at the end of the 1994 season, Jarrett went to drive for Robert Yates in 1995 to replace Ernie Irvan in the #28 who had been injured at Michigan in August of the previous season. When Ernie Irvan returned to this ride, Yates created a second team in 1996 allowing for Jarrett to drive the #88 Quality Care Ford.
Starting in 2001, Jarrett signed on to drive the UPS Ford for Yates and after the 2006 season he ended his long-time relationship with Yates to drive for the newly created Michael Waltrip Racing team.
Jarrett will officially retire from NASCAR racing after this week's Food City 500.
